What is the difference in coverage between Medi-Cal and Covered California?​​​​

Medi-Cal offers low-cost or free health coverage to eligible Californian residents with limited income.

Covered California is the state’s health insurance marketplace where Californians can shop for health plans and access financial assistance if they qualify for it.

All of the health plans offered through Covered California or by Medi-Cal include the same comprehensive set of benefits known as “essential health benefits.”

Essential health benefits consist of:

  • Outpatient (Ambulatory) services
  • Emergency services
  • Hospitalization
  • Maternity and Newborn care
  • Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Services, including Behavioral Health Treatment
  • Prescription Drugs
  • Programs such as physical and occupational therapy (known as Rehabilitative & Habilitative Services) and devices
  • Laboratory services
  • Preventive and wellness services & chronic disease management
  • Children’s (Pediatric) services, including oral and vision care.

What Does Medi-Cal Dental Cover?

​The Medi-Cal Dental Program covers a variety of dental services for Medi-Cal beneficiaries, such as:

  • Diagnostic and preventive dental hygiene (e.g. examinations, x-rays, and teeth cleanings);
  • Emergency services for pain control;
  • Tooth extractions;
  • Fillings;
  • Root canal treatments (anterior/posterior);
  • Crowns (prefabricated/laboratory);
  • Scaling and root planning;
  • Periodontal maintenance;
  • Complete and partial dentures; and
  • Orthodontics for children who qualify.

The following dental benefits are available for adults:

  • Exams and X-rays.
  • Cleanings.
  • Fluoride treatments.
  • Fillings.
  • Anterior root canals (front teeth).
  • Prefabricated crowns.
  • Full dentures.
  • Other medically necessary dental services.

Denti-Cal will only provide up to $1800 in covered services per year.

However, some services are not counted towards the cap, such as dentures, extractions, and emergency
services.

Your dental provider may check with Denti-Cal to find out if you have reached the $1800 cap before treating you.
